#ShareKindness

Being kind is a simple way to give back to the world.

One simple act of kindness can change a persons entire day, and ultimately their life. I think anyone can recall a moment in time where you were having a less-than-perfect day, when one simple gesture, a smile from a stranger, a funny meme on the internet or crazy statement from a child makes you laugh. Sometimes that’s all it takes. Say “hello” to a stranger, share a feel good story with a friend.

I’ve seen it in action. Back in the late 90’s I was getting ready to meet some of my friends for a girls night out. I stopped at the local gas station to fill up my tank to prepare for the 45 minute drive. As I was pumping the gas into my Honda Accord I noticed a nice looking older man at the pump next to me. If I had to guess, he was in his late 60’s, early 70’s. Out of the blue he said to me “you make this world beautiful”.  It was so unexpected and so sweet. It instantly changed my mood from “ho-hum” to “I’m going to have a great evening”. That little statement instantly shifted my energy for the better and was something I have not forgotten. To this day I am very appreciative of that kind man’s words to me, although I have no idea who he was.

If you are fortunate enough to provide something to someone in need, do it. If you think of doing something nice for someone else, do it. The gesture does not have to be huge, because those who need a little uplift in their day will appreciate any care or concern directed their way.

For those of you who are competitive in nature, you can see this as a personal challenge. Make it your mission to make as many people as you can smile, to change the mood, even if it’s just for one moment, of someone who is upset, stressed or sad. The effort will have immeasurable results and it’s impact will ripple outward.

A self-ish reason to be kind:
The amazing thing is how doing something nice for someone else will make you feel. Doing something for someone else is a great way to lift your own mood. It turns the focus off of your own worries and shifts it to giving outward. Go ahead and try it… on a day that you are feeling down or less-desirable do something nice for someone else and see how easily your day shifts for the better. It’s an easy antidote to remedy the blues for anyone.

The holiday season is a great time to kick off a new pattern in your life for the better. Perhaps it’s also helpful to know this can change the metaphoric climate of the world around us. It truly can. So, start today – it’s never too late to be kind.
